Deck Builders in Perth

Perth decks spend most of the year under hot sun and strong UV, with dry summers that can open up timber that has not been oiled. Hardwoods such as jarrah and merbau are common picks here. Composite boards suit owners who would rather skip the yearly oiling. Pool surrounds and raised decks on sloping blocks make up a lot of the work across the metro area.

Where a building permit is needed, owners must get it from their local government before construction starts. Building and Energy says most building work valued at $20,000 or more that needs a permit must be carried out by a registered builder. The deck builders below work right across Perth, from the northern beaches to the hills and the southern suburbs. Before you sign, ask each one who looks after the permit and what the quote covers.

Choosing Boards for Perth Conditions

Hardwood decks need regular oiling to hold their colour in full sun, and boards left bare will grey over time. Composite costs more up front but asks for little more than a wash. Look at samples outdoors before you choose, because colours can read quite differently in strong light.

Around pools, think about grip under wet feet and how hot the surface gets in summer. Darker boards hold more heat. Ask the builder what sits underneath as well, since the subframe and footings decide how long a deck stays level.

Contracts, Deposits and Insurance

According to Building and Energy, the Home Building Contracts Act covers fixed price contracts between $7,500 and $500,000, and the most a builder can take as a deposit before work starts is 6.5 per cent of the contract price. Home indemnity insurance is required for building work that needs a permit and is valued at more than $20,000. Hold off on payments until that cover is in place.

You can check a builder’s registration on the Building and Energy registers. A good quote names the board species or composite brand, the subframe material, the footing type and who lodges the permit.
