Landscapers in Perth

Landscaping in Perth means working with sandy soil and limited water. Most gardens need soil improvement before planting, and retaining walls are common on the sloping blocks of the hills and coastal suburbs. Limestone, brick paving and decking all show up often, along with reticulated lawns and waterwise garden beds.

Many Perth landscapers handle a whole project, from design and earthworks through to paving, walls, reticulation and planting. Some structures need a building permit from your local government before work starts. Building and Energy explains when a registered builder is needed and how home building contracts work. The landscapers below take on residential gardens across the metro area, and several also do commercial work.

What to Ask a Perth Landscaper

Start with what is included. A full quote should list earthworks, soil improvement, retaining, paving, reticulation, plants and turf as separate items, so you can compare like with like. Ask who does the design and whether a plan is part of the price or charged on its own.

Look at finished jobs that are a year or two old if you can. New gardens always look good on handover day, and older work shows how the plants and hard surfaces have held up in Perth summers.

Permits and Registered Builders

Owners are responsible for getting a building permit, where one is required, from their local government before construction begins. Building and Energy says most building work valued at $20,000 or more that requires a permit must be carried out by a registered builder. Roofed outdoor areas, known as patios in WA, are treated a little differently, and those valued under $50,000 do not need a registered building contractor, although permit rules still apply.

Retaining walls and structures near boundaries are worth raising with your council early. If your project includes a pool, the landscaper should also be clear about who supplies and installs the safety barrier.
